What this playbook covers

The playbook is a working reference, not a manifesto. Every chapter is written to be printed, dog-eared, and returned to on the days that got hard. Here is what the 18 pages actually contain, in the order a reader meets them.

  • Naming what you are feeling. The clinical difference between exhaustion, burnout, and depression, and the nine physical, emotional, and cognitive markers that separate the three. Family Caregiver Alliance data on caregiver depression prevalence is cited by page number.
  • The 14-day reset, day by day. One small action per day. Day 3 is a ten-minute walk. Day 7 is the primary-care visit most caregivers are eighteen months overdue for. Day 12 is the honest paragraph on money and burnout that most self-care books leave out.
  • The weekly caregiver check-in worksheet. A seven-question one-page instrument to run against yourself every Sunday, printable, form-fillable, keeps a running record of what is improving and what is not.
  • Sleep protection for caregivers who wake in the night. Specific protocols that do not require your parent to sleep through the night before you sleep through the night.
  • The therapist escalation criteria. The three markers that mean the checklist is no longer enough, plus how to find a clinician who understands caregiver-specific presentations.
  • When outside help is not weakness. The permission chapter, written honestly for the daughter who has been telling herself that hiring help would prove she is failing.

What you will do with it in the first 7 days

The playbook is designed for the reader who has bandwidth for exactly one thing today. Day 1 is a five-minute audit of your last week; you sit down with a pen and a printed page and mark which of the nine burnout markers appeared. Day 2 is one specific conversation you have been postponing, with a script for the opening sentence. Day 3 is a ten-minute walk, outside, with your phone in your pocket rather than in your hand — the exact protocol from a 2023 Rosalynn Carter Institute intervention study.

Day 4 protects one specific sleep window against the night wake-ups. Day 5 gives you a vocabulary for anticipatory grief, so the feeling stops being nameless. Day 6 finds two hours of respite the week you thought had no respite in it. Day 7 is the primary-care visit you have been rescheduling since spring. Seven small movements in seven days. None of them fix caregiving. All of them interrupt the escalation pattern that turns hard weeks into hard years.

How the delivery works

The flow is deliberately small. Enter your email in the form below and click the button. Within thirty seconds we send a confirmation message from hello at morriselder dot com — open it and click the confirm link. Within five minutes of that click, the download link arrives in your inbox from the same address. Corporate mail servers occasionally add two or three minutes of delay; if the email does not appear, check your promotions or spam folder and mark the message as not spam so the rest of the course lands where you can see it. The thank-you page in your browser also carries the download link inline as a backup, active for 24 hours.

Once you confirm, you join the free 12-part Family Caregiver Foundation course. One email every three or four days for about five weeks, each 400 to 600 words, each ending with one concrete thing to do this week and a link to the corresponding article on the site. Estimated reading time for the playbook itself is 35 to 45 minutes for a full pass, though most caregivers read it in three sittings across a first week. Unsubscribe with one click at any point and your address leaves every list within one business day.

Our editorial ethics, in three sentences

We do not accept payment from home-care agencies to include their names in any playbook, and we do not sell subscriber data or swap lists with any partner. We send at most one email per week after the 12-part course completes, and every email carries a one-click unsubscribe link. If you write back, a real person on the editorial team reads your message and replies personally — the reply address is monitored, not automated.

Common questions about the playbook

Do I have to sign up for the newsletter to get this playbook?

Yes. Entering your email delivers the PDF and enrolls you in the free 12-part Family Caregiver Foundation course. We built it this way because the same readers who benefit from a burnout reference tend to benefit from the ongoing conversation. Unsubscribe with one click at any point and your address leaves every list within one business day.

Is the Burnout Recovery Playbook actually free?

Yes, at no cost, with no card required, no upgrade tier, and no affiliate compensation from any home-care agency. The playbook is an editorial artifact. Our publisher stance is that a caregiver who is running out of runway should not pay for the reference document that helps her stop the escalation.

How long is the playbook and how does the 14-day plan work?

The playbook is roughly 18 pages, including chapters, worksheets, and bibliography. The 14-day plan gives you one small evidence-based action per day, chosen from the pool that Family Caregiver Alliance and Rosalynn Carter Institute research have shown moves the needle on caregiver burnout scores. Some days ask for ten minutes. Some days ask for one sentence.

Can I share the playbook with a sibling or a spouse?

Yes. Print it, forward the PDF, or hand it to the sibling who has been asking how you are. We designed the playbook to be shared inside a family. If your sibling wants the ongoing course as well, the same download page will enroll them independently. There is no per-family license or personalized watermark.

How do I unsubscribe once I have the playbook?

Every email from us carries a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. You can also reply to any email with the word UNSUBSCRIBE. Removal is complete within one business day. Your address is deleted from our platform and is never sold, shared, or reused for any other purpose.
